'Fantastic' Local Achievement at Mod

A commendable fourth place in the Puirt a Beul competition at the National Mod in Fort William on Friday 19 October was achieved by Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir.
Competing against 13 other top Gaelic choirs, the sole Perthshire choir (pictured here at the event) was just 4 points behind the winning Glasgow Gaelic Musical Association, with Dingwall in second place, and Inverness in third place.
The winning Glasgow choir also went home with the coveted Lovat and Tullibardine trophy, with the Aberfeldy Choir placed sixth out of 12 entrants in that competition.
“We are thrilled with the results of both competitions!” said Choir president Lou Oppenheim. “Six weeks ago it was touch and go whether we’d even get to the National Mod, as we were down to just 2 basses and 3 tenors, and then our conductor Frances McCallum left the area.

“But the wonderful Isobel Rutter from Glasgow stepped into the breach, and she is so gifted and inspiring – she conducted us at the Lochgilphead Mod, which we won, and the Lochaber results show we’re back up there with the ‘big guns’. It’s fantastic!”
Lou added that the Gaelic marks awarded by the Lochaber judges were very high, and said that this was down to sheer hard work from the choir members and their Gaelic tutor, Seonaig Barbour.
