Choir Singers Success at the Provincial Mod

Members of Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir enjoyed considerable success at the Perthshire & Angus Provincial Mod on Saturday 10 June.

Gilliain MacDonald won both the Cuach Braghad-Albainn and the Margaret Forbes McLeish Trophy for own-choice songs, as well as the Ladies’ Oran Mor competition for the prestigious Nancy Ewing Memorial Quaich; she was also runner-up for the George A Matheson Memorial Cup.

Brian Owen narrowly missed first place in the Own Choice contest, and gained the highest marks for music in the Prescribed Song class.

In the Duet competition, Gilliain and Brian were a commendable second place to Audrey and David Paterson from Taynuilt.

The quartet "Fuaimeach", consisting of Gilliain and Brian with May Brown and Peter MacIntosh (pictured above), retained the Michael Drury Memorial Trophy for the third consecutive year. Singing to a packed Town Hall, their music adjudication included the remark "Thoroughly enjoyable...you could hear a pin drop." The Gaelic adjudicator agreed: "This was absolutely beautiful."

The four will be singing with the choir on Thursday 14 June for a charity concert in Dunkeld Cathedral at 7.30pm. Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir will be joined by the Cancer Challenge Singers from Wales to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support; a few tickets are still available from the Sheep Shop in Pitlochry's Atholl Road.
